It was my dad’s birthday at the weekend and to celebrate we jumped in the car and went wherever the mood took him. The birthday mood took us to Bedruthan Steps – which is quite literally one of the most beautiful places in Cornwall, the world.

The Great Belgium Waffle Tour 2013

I am now officially 25, or as my dear friends like to put it,”in your 26th year”, “half way to fifty” and “a quarter of a century old”! From these remarks it was no wonder that I didn’t really feel like celebrating this year. However, determined to make me embrace my quarter century my friends and family really came up trumps. We organised a small gathering at our even smaller flat (standing room only, folks!) I had planned a pizza night, but to my surprise my amazing parents sent a delivery of Philp’s Pasties. Being born and raised in Cornwall the pasty is pretty much a staple part of our diet and my little town’s bakery make the most incredible pasties ever. It’s something that cannot be recreated anywhere else in the country and try as people might it always comes way below par, and it is something I have missed since moving to London, so receiving this little treat really did make the day. I also have a lot of Cornish friends now living in London so they were equally delighted with a little taste of home. What does this have to do with Belgium and waffles I hear you ask? Well …

For a few weeks before, my dear chap had had to put up with me complaining about being nearly 25, and how I had achieved nothing with my life blah blah blah (insert overly dramatic nonesense here!), he was desperate to make me want to embrace and to remember my birthday and set about making it a truly incredible birthday. When I first read my birthday card I thought he was treating me to breakfast that morning, and if you know me well enough you’ll know I’m partial to a cracking breakfast. But no, it wasn’t breakfast that morning, it was breakfast the following Tuesday, in Belgium! BELGIUM! We were to spend the day in Brussels eating Waffles for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

And what a day it was!  We got the Eurostar across to Brussels which spent a lot more time above ground than I thought, the scenery through France and Belgium is absolutely beautiful.  The chap and I have never been particularly great at directions and thought we had planned out the route to the city center perfectly…turns out after an hour of walking about in torrential rain we had actually managed to a big loop and ended up back at the station. So, soggy and starving we caught a taxi to La Grand Place and started our day from there, calling at the first waffle place we found…

As we were only there for a day we wandered around the little streets, taking in all the incredible architecture.  There some incredible Gothic buildings, some dating back to the early 1400s, that I would like to go back and explore more thoroughly one day.

At the Magritte Museum

At the Magritte Museum

I am a HUGE fan or Rene Magritte and was desperate to go to the Magritte Museum, which was amazing! One of the windows on the outside of the building is made to look like it is reflecting a bright blue sky with fluffy white clouds, a stark contrast from the thick, grey rainy skies of the day we were there! Inside the museum there are letters and photographs of Magritte and his family and friends as well a large range of his artwork. It was nice to see some of his earlier work that I am less familiar with rather than the works people think of when Magritte is mentioned.

We left the museum as it was closing (perfect timing!) and walked through a nearby park. We spotted a guy with an umbrella covering his face and the chap and I couldn’t resist taking his picture; our very own Magritte homage!!!

It really was a wonderful day, and one of the best birthdays yet. Brussels is an incredible city and I would love to go back and explore the city a bit more, as well as the surrounding area. Perhaps an inter-railing summer holiday is called for…
